Possible laptop video card upgrade to play starcraft 2?

Hey everyone, I have a Compal JHT00 laptop which with its Nvidia Geforce 9300M GS 256MB can chug away at Starcraft 2 at barely passable FPS when every graphical setting is set to the lowest. Im an avid Starcraft gamer though and would love to be able to find another II MXM video card slot card to get that little bit of extra power to play this game.

Could anyone here help me? Btw, thanks to "Laptop repair" guy for his insights in this thread:

The other stats for my Compal JHT00 is:

Intel Pentium Centrino 2 (2,53 GHz)

4 GB of DDR2 RAM (4 x 1GB)

OS: windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

Video: Nvidia Geforce 9300M GS 256mb

And though I greatly appreciate any feedback, this laptop with its II MXM video card slot can have its video card upgraded - though somewhat of a hassle. Please dont tell me the usual "laptops cant have their graphics card upgraded nuub", because this one can.

Thanks a lot! :)|||Then you answered your own question.

Replace the graphics card nuub!

Try eBay!

DOH!|||This one would be very very good

Even with your low spec processor you could play higher spec games with this one. Although it may use more power. It is 1 GB of graphics power

This one is used by apple so you know you cant go wrong. Has half of last ones memory (512 MB). But still high end for a laptop. These cards would be great choices for Starcraft 2 as well as many new titles like Modern Warfare 3. These would be the best choices even though they may be a bit costly.

First one is better costs less but consumes more power than the second one.|||MXM Upgrade is your friend.

Not only do they sell a few really sweet MXM video cards, but they can assist you with questions compatibility, etc.

eBay is also your friend in this...

Now... the question becomes *which* card... right?

Ok. The x8xx series within NVidia is never a bad direction... the 8800 variants and 9800 variants were the top of those particular lines. So... one of these http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=MXM+… (like the one for $179) would be a vast improvement for you. Just as one of these 8800's http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=MXM+…

When you get to the newer NVidia cards... the GeForce 1xx, 2xx, 3xx, 4xx... again, shooting for a second number higher than 6 is the way to go... but you will be hard pressed to find one that is a lower revision than MXM 3.

In the ATI/AMD camp... believe it or not, you want to look again at the second number. a 2 is the bottom of the series, a 9 is the top. So... just as an example, an ATI Radeon 4250 would be a slow entry level chipset, while an ATI Radeon 4650 would be much faster, and much better for gaming. But again... the newer and better cards are going to be MXM 3.

That is not a hard and fast... MXM Upgrade has a MXM 2 NVidia GTX 280 for sale, as well as an ATI 4670. Neither is cheap, but you can't expect them to be.|||Laptop computers are popular with people of all computing habits, from casual users to hardcore gamers. As more media applications such as games and movies are used by laptop owners, many people feel the need to have the video card in their laptop upgraded so that they can run the latest media and games. If you have a laptop and want to upgrade the video card, you may be able to do so.

1

Contact your laptop manufacturer to determine if laptop's video card can be upgraded. Unless you purchase a high-end or gaming laptop, the video card is usually not upgradable because it is integrated directly into the motherboard of the computer. Higher-end and gaming laptops have discrete video cards that can oftentimes be upgraded if the laptop manufacturer chose to produce an upgraded model of the video card. If the laptop is unable to have its video card upgraded, you'll have to buy a new laptop to get an upgraded video card.

2

Purchase an upgraded video card directly from the manufacturer. Laptop video cards are specially designed and made by the laptop manufacturers and are generally available only from the manufacturers themselves. You may be able to find them on auction sites or from third-party dealers, but to ensure that the card works properly with your laptop model, you should go through your computer manufacturer.

3

Find out if the card is user-serviceable or not. If it is, you will be sent the part and can install it yourself by taking apart the laptop computer, removing the old video card and putting the new one in. If not, then you may have to pay an additional fee to have the laptop manufacturer send a technician to install the video card for you.
